Wetlands grow - A GALLERY featuring mangrove know-how opened at the Qi’ao Mangrove Nature Reserve on Hengqin Island last Tuesday to mark the 14th World Wetlands Day.
The Qi’ao Mangrove Wetlands Ecological Garden will be built in two phases consisting of an education park at the Mangrove Nature Reserve and one phase at the Wetlands Park.
The education park will house a wetlands promotion centre with investment exceeding 150 million yuan ($22 million). Construction will commence at the end of this year.
The wetlands in the Mangrove Nature Reserve cover more than 5,000 hectares whereas since 1999 the mangrove area has been expanded from 32 to 700 hectares with 37 species.
Museum design chosen
A NEW landmark on Lovers Avenue, the Zhuhai Museum and Urban Planning Exhibition Hall, will feature both a “dragon head” and “phoenix tail” to complement the Zhuhai Opera House in the distance. The design was created by a team consisting of GPM International Inc and the China Academy of Building Research and selected from those of seven world-famous designers.
With total investment of 650 million yuan ($95.2 million), the project is sited at the southeast corner of the Urban Culture & Arts Centre at the intersection of Lovers Avenue and Meihua Road in Xiangzhou. With floor space of 48,400sqm, of which the Zhuhai Museum accounts for 33,000sqm and Exhibition Hall 15,400sqm, the project will cover a total area of 50,336sqm.
Jiangmen has air link
THE Zhuhai Airport Jiangmen Departure Hall, the fifth of its kind, opened as the Jiangmen-Zhuhai Airport shuttle began running on Thursday.
The departure hall provides flight information, air ticket sales, check-in, baggage delivery, shuttle bus and seamless connection service. Passengers can get the preliminaries out of the way at the departure hall in Jiangmen and then directly enter the security channel for boarding when they arrive at Zhuhai Airport after an hour on the road.
Zhuhai Airport now has routes to Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Chengdu, Chongqing, Guiyang, Nanning, Xi’an, Zhengzhou, Wuhan, Hefei, Changsha, Xiamen, Haikou, Sanya, Wenzhou and Jinan.
Rong book donated
MY Life in China and America, a biography of Rong Hong (Yung Wing), the first Chinese to graduate from an American university and forefather of Chinese overseas study, was donated to the Zhuhai Museum last Tuesday by Frank Yung of Singapore.
The Rong Hong-autographed book donated by Rong Hong’s grandson is of great literary and cultural value. It is an important collectable well worth academic research, according to a leader of the museum. It is also one of the most valuable, representative and historically significant among the nearly 200 collectables concerning the Chinese Educational Mission (CEM), he noted.
New Area empowered
THE municipal government has issued a resolution to make the Hengqin New Area Administrative Committee part of the City-Level Administration Authority.
The Hengqin New Area Administrative Committee is authorised to examine and approve investment projects, and exercise executive power over land, planning, construction, transportation, environmental protection, water and other aspects related to the island’s development.
The resolution requires that all government departments work together with the Hengqin New Area Administrative Committee on matters of mutual concern.
EPCOS grows
THE second-phase facility of EPCOS Zhuhai Co Ltd, a German-based EPCOS AG subsidiary in Hongqi Town, Jinwan District, commenced construction last Monday and will become the largest TDK-EPCOS production base upon completion.
EPCOS is a worldwide manufacturer of electronic components and systems. The company portfolio includes capacitors, ceramic components, EMC filters, inductors, non-linear resistors, RF modules, surface acoustic wave components, surge arresters and ferrites.
Founded 13 years ago in Hongqi, EPCOS now has 4,600 employees and had output value of 700 million yuan ($102.5 million) in 2009.
In 2008, EPCOS AG merged with TDK Corp to create a strong presence for the industry-leading electronic components company across customer sectors and regions.
