A Shenzhen-based company called Yosion Technology has begun accepting online pre-orders for its new “Apple Peel 520,” a product that will convert Apple’s iPod Touch into an iPhone-like mobile phone.
Apple Peel 520, which consists of battery, docking connector and SIM card. Users have to install a special software to enable text messaging feature. The software bypasses the security Apple has in place for the iPod.
Once installed, the Apple Peel gets around five hours of talk time and 120 hours on standby, according to a review posted on Dailytech.com. The driving factor behind this is of course the high cost of the iPhone in China. The iPhone, which was officially launched on the mainland last October, more than two years after its debut in the US, costs between $588 – $740 while an iPod Touch is around $235. The Apple Peel sells for $57. The knock-off phones are usually cheaper and contain functions, such as wireless Internet, that are not available on the actual phones sold through legal channels.
The product is still in beta. According to a vendor accepting pre-orders for the case on e-commerce site Taobao, the Apple Peel 520 is approximately a week away from release. Yosion says that the finished product will resolve some of the problems, including issues with GPRS mobile data and undeletable SMS messages, that appeared in testing units.
