Can you tell us about yourself?
I started dancing since the age of 14, almost ten years ago in my hometown of Vizag, India. It has been almost one year since I arrived to Macau, and I am working as a dancing instructor at Yoga World.
My dance specialties are Bollywood Dancing and Indian Fusion Dance, obviously, as these are my roots and culture, but I am also trying to explore other fields such as Salsa, Street Dance, Cardio Funk, Bhangra, Bodyjam and Hip Hop. Music is where my inspiration comes from; music is the oasis where my energy lays against the tiredness of everyday life.
What does Dancing mean to you?
To me, dancing is a hidden, unspoken language in everyone’s soul. I believe that if we can move, we can dance, but some people are acting shy sometimes, and that is what I want to change. I am eager to make them to move, to dance, and I plan to do it one move at a time.
I think I am lucky to have the opportunity to start my career in Macau since I feel that I am just at the starting point of my career, and there are a bunch of better dancers out there. Macau gives me the opportunity to use my skills that I have developed through the years, and do what I believe in. This opportunity is just a proof that everyone just needs a chance to rise, and they could make their dream realized.
What challenges have you encountered while living in Macau?
Every day can be challenging, especially when you are in a foreign country. For example, different languages and cultures create invisible boundaries between the local Macau people and me. Yet, I use what I have - my body language, and this is very often my only way to communicate.
But with this challenge comes an advantage - I am happy to be making friends with different people with different nationalities. Here we have people from Macau, China, Russia, Portugal, Germany and many other places, and despite of the fact that we do not share the same culture or the same language, we express ourselves through dancing. It is just like in the ancient ages, before the words were invented, when people danced to communicate.
I love Macau for its peacefulness. Since the scale of the city, it is much easier to establish one’s career. People might assume that there are more working opportunities and better paid jobs in Hong Kong, however, the amount of competitors raises relatively.
In Macau, anyone could be a star, and I am trying to establish myself as a leader in the Bollywood Dance filed. I think that Macau was ready for what I bring, and I am glad to see that so far there was a warm welcome to the Indian culture and dance.
What is your latest project in Macau?
Besides teaching Bollywood Dance in Macau, currently I am working for Bollywood Dance workshop in Hong Kong Pure International (HK) Limited Company. I am currently planning to put up an event in Macau, that is named BOLLYWOOD IS BACK. This event will focus on further introducing Bollywood Dance to the people who are interested in Indian culture, as well as raise the interest for those that have never heard about the dance.
