Young American sentensed to prison term in Zhuhai
By now, I’m sure that many in the Zhuhai EFL community have been hearing a lot of rumor about the plight of a young American, Scott Orr, a former teacher at both TPR and Fountain, who was arrested in early February; and has been incarcerated in Zhuhai ever since. Well, like the late Paul Harvey used to say; “Here’s the rest of the story.” In a nutshell, he went to trial last Wed., and was convicted and sentenced to a 3-tear term in a Chinese prison for extortion. For those of you who don’t read Chinese, perhaps you can get a friend to translate for you.

I have known young Mr. Orr for 2 years; and though I always knew that he wasn’t exactly “the brightest bulb in the box”, I never thought that he would be THAT stupid. It’s stuff like this that the EFL community certainly does not need.
wow... 3-tear term ... you mean 3 years?
Is he actually in? the Zhuhai big house? Not some other prison? Is he allowed visitors? I'm not in China anymore but perhaps some gernous minded person could start a collection of books or magazines or something to bring him if its allowed.
People may disagree with me on this but I personally think he should be in prison, this kind of thing gives all foreigns a bad name.
I have no idea about that, but still hope he can be better, because he is very young, don't wanna see he spend the bad time in Prison.
The article is in Chinese. What exactly did he do? This is so sad. Last year there was a child abuser in Suzhou, now this...
Just one night stand with chinese girl, but she later tell him that she already have boyfriend and would like to stop.
but the American have the naked(not really) picture of the chinese girl, and ask for money , und dann.........
What I got from a google translated version of the article was that she was an ex-girlfriend of his, he had some naked pics of her and threatened to post them on QQ if she didn't cough up 100,000 rmb. He says he didn't ask for money but she offered it to him and since he needed it he was going to take it. Its clear who the courts believed. Three years still seems a bit harsh to me.
I feel a bit shocked to read about this...........but if he really did try to do extortion, he deserves the 3 years behind bars and then thrown out of China forever.......
it has taken me a very long time and allot of searching but I have finally found my son and it makes tears flow from my eyes,,,,,, If you see scotty please, please tell him that I love him and miss him very much,,, I am his dad. I am still trying to get help here in America help to get him him home
My son would not do that,,, he was a very good boy until he spent time In the war
Well let me tell you something,,,,, my son is not a bad boy,,,, so really you can shove it,,,,, I myself am disabled and believe me,,,, if I only knew who you was,,,,,, I would show you some trouble because my son is a loving and respectful kid. You people dont know him,,,, so how can you judge him,,, he did get a little messes up after the divorce but he was still a good kid and after the army he got alot more respectfull but thats what he needed
I would brather see him in An American prison,,, then I could visit him
If you really are his Dad, then I feel dreadfully sorry for you. 3 years is far to steep a sentence. Yes he may have been stupid but he does not deserve this. We have to remember how foolish we all were sometimes when we were young. My thoughts are with you. x
OMG, this is HORRIBLE!i d not read it until now. can pls any update on him? which prinson he is in? i hope i can visit him b4 i leave zh.
Hi Orrin
I left Zhuhai already. However, I will return to China on Dec. OMG, i really have no idea how tough the life is for him alone in Chinese prison.
I really have no idea how I would like to help but I think definitely I shall do something for him?
Do you have any suggestion?
Gosh..forget my typo..
I mean i would be KEEN on do sth for him..but i have no idea what shall/may I do.. Do you have any suggestion?
For privacy reasons to a third party I cannot mention names but I actually met the guy. Not a pleasant experience I must say. Something very uncomfortable about him and he had a very 'leery' eye on the female office staff. Judging from his comments and opinions, there was something very unstable about him, and clearly something 'missing' between his ears. The most amazing thing is how anybody could employ him!!! He should have been 'fired' on many different occasions for a multiple of reasons, begging the question; how could he have ever been employed!!! Who interviewed him!!!!

I think he got off easy with only 3 years. In the US he would have been hit with 5 to 10 for a felony extortion conviction.
