Setting up a dedicated server in China

Hello!
I've been looking through various options for setting up a dedicated server in or near China. If you've had experience with this I'd appreciate your suggestions, ideas, and caveats!
Personally, I'm computer literate to an extent. I could build my own beast and link it with a dynamic IP. The cost of building it myself is sooo much cheaper than even a few months of outsourcing it to HK or another city/country. But, I'd appreciate your stories on the subject!
Thanks -Ben
