Hi, this is Edward in Chan Cheng, a Chinese guy.

I'm looking for some friends who want to learn Chinese and we can do some language exchange stuff.

I'm working as an English trainer and I would like to meet some English native speakers. : )

Should I learn cantonese or mandarin in preparation for Foshan, China?

I'm heading to Foshan, China to train kung fu for a while. I learned that they primarily speak Cantonese, especially if older and born there. But, my question is, does that mean I should learn Cantonese or Mandarin then?

I suggest that you learn Mandarin. Most, if not all, will be able to understand Mandarin. It's also more useful world wide and may come in handy some day. It's also a lot easier to learn.

Cantonese is mainly used in the southern part of China and Hong Kong. It's also MUCH MUCH MORE difficult to learn that Mandarin. Cantonese also contain a lot of slang so it's never consistent with the written language. Mandarin is straight forward. I'm a Cantonese speaker and I can tell you that there's something new in the Cantonese language every day.
