You will have to pay some important deposit if you want to rent a car without a driver and also make sure that you have Chinese driving license which are not that easy to get.
So I would suggest with a driver.
And I will soon post the details of a couple companies that provide these kind of services

With a driver for sure it's not fun, only if you like to experience that. I wonder if there's any travel agency can provide a guide and a car for you. Do you live in Dongguan?

No worry about renting a car in mainland china with or without a driver. Driving in Mainland china is not that trouble. As far as I knew, if anyone with a driver licence in HK or Macau, you are able to get a chinese driver licence without any test. And foreign driver licence is recognized in HK or Macau. So the foreign dirver licence holder need to get a HK or Macau licence first, and then to get a mainland chinese driver licence next. This is it.
