Mandarin or Cantonese?
I agree with Paula Pan. Although most of the local people are speak Cantonese, but i still think Mandarin is much easier for foreigners. For you guys Mandarin is easier to pronounce than Cantonese. I have many foreign friends they can speak very fluent Mandarin but not Cantonese, haha..
Anyway, welcome to China, hope you will have a great time here!

Mandarin or Cantonese?
Both, I think, but if you speak Cantonese, non-Cantonese speaking people may not understand you, and Mandarin is understood throughout the country including Guangdong.

Migraines from "fake" Beer around Bar Street
Sorry to hear that Ben . One thing I can say is that a lot of beer that I used to buy in the old Ryan's bar was ok but some times II would say 2 kegs out of 10 kegs would be off and I started to watch the dates of production on each keg . The ones that were off always had a fresh production date . 2 to 4 weeks old and they were always off . What I found out is that any beer you get by the keg has to be at least 5 weeks old because by the time the kegs get to the store (suppliers) It must be at least this date . So I know that if I buy a keg any keg and the date is less then 4 weeks new I will not buy it . What they are doing is taking the old kegs that are going off and put a new product date on them . this could be something that you have drank and the bar owners have no idea .... cheers

From Zhongshan to Guangzhou Airport by Coach (Airport Express)
Usually Airport Check-in will provide one-stop service. Maybe you should contact Zhongshan Check-in for details, tell them your flight information and consult the schedule.

Downstair Bar (Zhuhai)
This is a really chilled quirky bar in an off-the-beaten-track spot.

From Zhongshan to Guangzhou Airport by Coach (Airport Express)
I have a question for anyone who has used this service before. Firstly is it reliable? My query is that I want to be in Shanghai for the Grand Prix weekend, 16th-18th of April and hopefully have time for a good friday night as well. I finish work at about 15.30. How long does it take to get to Guangzhou airport?
Also what does the Zhongshan check-in mean? Does that mean that you can check-in for the airport here? Is it possible to check-in online for Guangzhou domestic flights? Or if not what's the minimal time that you need to be at the airport for before take-off?
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help!

Migraines from "fake" Beer around Bar Street
Yeah there must be a way to fake the cans I would have thought...
Still, even though it's a risk every time, it doesn't stop any of us drinking! I just think we have to be more vigilant and if your beer, mixed drink, wine tastes funny send it back without prejudice and don’t be afraid to ask for a replacement.

Roman Seaside (Zhuhai)
Was there on Sunday night and decided to try and Chinese food for a change!
Between two of us we had a platter of:
- Curry Beef Fried Rice
- Hunan Spicy Chicken (WARNING: Lots of bones & skin)
- Hot Clay Dish Aubergine
- Beef & Cucumber
- Copious Amounts of AsahiGot to say that apart from the 2nd dish the rest was amazing Chinese food. I will definitely be going back there for Chinese food again, they have a large menu and it's bi-lingual (EN/CN).
And anybody going there must try and Hot Clay Dish Aubergine! In Chinese if I remember rightly I think it's (because the English is not called exactly that) - TieBan HongShao QieZi 铁板红烧茄子.
Enjoy.

Western Union (Zhuhai)
There's also on in the Post Office opposite Dynamics Pizza on Feng Huang Lu (main thoroughfare in old Xiangzhou parallel to Lover Road.
Their forms are bi-lingual which is nice. But the staff there don't speak a word of English and tend to like to ask questions. Translator is not necessary but is recommended.
As is time, it took me a good 40 minutes just to send 1,000 RMB worth of HKD to Hong Kong.

Sangkwong Computer (Zhuhai)
Yep I can second that, been using Leo for over 2 years, he setup our full office server infrastructure working on top of an existing horrible setup, we were inpressed so kept him on a retainer service fee which is useful.
He's now in the process of setting up our new office infrastructure in a 500 sqm premesis from scratch and also setting up the infrastructure for The Office Sports Bar located in Xiangzhou (Behind Jusco) to be opened at the beginning of April.
I can hands down recommend Leo to anybody, just please don't ask him to do a big job for you until April! Hehe.

Migraines from "fake" Beer around Bar Street
What stops people from making fake cans?
I heard of drinks companies going so far as to remove labels, drill holes through glass, fill with fakeness, re-seal and re-apply the label - all to save what? A few RMB?! Boo! :(
I've been VERY ill here maybe twice in 2 years. Lucky, based on how often I'm out.
It might be that I've developed a resistance to it, which is a scary thought! Some bars / restaurants won't even know that they are buying poor-quality goods - so hard to tell...
-
Sangkwong Computer (Zhuhai)
I've been working with Leo for nearly a year now and can definitely recommend his services!
He comes all the way from Jida to our spot in Nanping - always with a smile - speaks EXCELLENT English and knows his stuff!
I know for a fact he is now an integral part of a LOT of businesses here in Zhuhai and I would suggest any individuals with computer requirements give him a shout too!

Western Union (Zhuhai)
Is it true that they will only accept 'mint' (perfect / as new) US dollar notes?
Always remember to double-triple check the details on the form. Someone missed out my middle name on a Western Union transfer once so we had to cancel and go through it all over again.
Double-TRIPLE check everything!
If I remember correctly, there's also one on NingXi Lu (Road) just North of the petrol (gas) station.
Website [ http://www.westernunion.cn/en/index.php ] has a complete list of Zhuhai W.U. spots.

Roman Seaside (Zhuhai)
They ran out of the 10 RMB Tsing Daos - so are now offering the cool & crisp Asahi (a LOT stronger!) for the same AMAZING price of just 10 RMB!
If you haven't tried the spinach, blue cheese and vinaigrette dressing salad you MUST - it's one of our faves!
Did somebody say homemade soft-serve style vanilla ice cream? Mmmmm... bring on those hot summer afternoons :)

2010 Zhuhai Spring&Summer Guide (Almost 2000RMB Coupons inside)
Absolutely awesome stuff - everyone should have a copy!
I was in The Cellar when Harry brought the new copies in, but I've now seen them in LOADS of spots throughout Zhuhai.
Zhuhai old-timers - you might feel like you know your way around, but grab one and give it to a newbie - we were all lost once!
The coupons are also great - I actually got ca$h-back on the wine I was enjoying when Harry came in! :)
Keep up the good work team! :) x
