Guangzhou to develop three pillar industries

The development of the automobile industry, along with two more pillar industries, will be prioritized this year in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province, to drive local economic growth, according to a government work report.

Because of expected slower growth in exports, the booming southern city will focus more on investment and development of the three main industries, including auto manufacturing, petrochemical and electronic information, to maintain economic growth, according to the report.

Shenzhen authorities expect the number of cross-border schoolchildren to reach as high as 80,000 by 2017, four times the current number, a social service group said yesterday.

This emerged as new research showed that almost 85 per cent of cross-border pupils intended to continue studying in Hong Kong and 70 per cent wanted to work in the city.

Shenzhen to reach Lusophone world via Macau

Only Macau can be the conduit for Shenzhen’s endeavours to increase its trade with the Portuguese-speaking world, Shenzhen Mayor Xu Qin says.

Mr Xu, speaking after officials held their annual meeting about cooperation between Macau and Shenzhen, said his city was particularly eager to sell electric vehicles in Lusophone markets.

“Shenzhen would like to see the products of our key industries penetrating markets in Portuguese-speaking countries, and Macau can play an agent’s role,” he told reporters.

Lisbon’s Orient Museum showcases artwork

The Orient Museum in Lisbon, Portugal, will be exhibiting the artwork of 15 contemporary artists from Macau until April 27. Titled “Fever”, the exhibit was inaugurated on February 13, presenting paintings, sculptures, photography and video artworks to mark the 15th anniversary of Macau’s transfer of sovereignty.

The 66 artworks exhibited are intended to showcase the diversity of local artists. “Fever” is also a reflection upon the territory of Macau as a privileged example of cultural encounters in the 21st century.

Kuching-Shenzhen direct flights

KUCHING: The Tourism Ministry hopes that the plan to have direct flights between Kuching and Shenzhen, China will be realised in May this year to boost the tourism industry of both cities.

Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said with the three times a week direct flights, the state can attract more tourists from China, thus strengthening the ties between the two countries.

Shenzhen's first private airline to take off in March

Shenzhen’s first private airline, Donghai Airlines, will begin offering passenger flights March 1, Shenzhen Economic Daily reported.

The airline’s first flight will provide service to Ningbo and Dalian on March 1. The airline is planning to serve major domestic cities including Chongqing, Nanjing, Shanghai, Beijing, Guiyang, Harbin and more.
With a colorful seagull as its mascot, the airline will use Boeing 737-800 planes to carry passengers.
